Last Sunday, Don and I took a short road trip as we are sometimes wont to do. We left Owingsville and drove through Olympia, then to Menifee County, and then on to the Red River Gorge. Don said he wanted to show me something, so we drove up a winding road through what I think is one of the prettiest areas of the state. We had to dodge a lot of what looked to be college students out hiking "The Gorge," but that is a good thing in my book.
What he wanted to show me was the Gladie Cultural Environmental Learning Center. I had no idea it was there!
We parked, went inside, and were both impressed with the facility.
You can learn to make and shoot an arrow.
You can learn about Daniel Boone.
You can read about folk tales handed down from the "old-timers," like the one about Nim Wills and the Magic Arch . . .
or, John Swift and his silver mine.
There are displays about weaving and quilting.
And a huge loom.
And pretty views.
We drove on and Don liked this bridge.
I liked the scenery.
But not driving through the Nada Tunnel.
We went on to Natural Bridge, ate at the lodge, and then made our way back home, where the scenery currently looks like this!

For my brother-in-law, Bill, who couldn't believe it when I told him how many are running and how many signs are going up all over the place. |
